Polygonatum odoratum is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Asparagaceae family. The stem is cylindrical; the leaves are alternate, oval or ovate-oblong, with a pointed apex, grayish white below, and smooth to papillary rough veins below; the perianth is yellow-green or white, the perianth tube is straight, and the filaments are filamentous. Subsmooth or papillary; berries are blue-black when ripe; flowering period is from May to June, and fruit period is from July to September. According to the "Compendium of Materia Medica", the stems of Polygonatum odoratum are strong, like bamboo arrow shafts, and have joints, hence the name.
