To remove stones and metal impurities from bulk star anise without damaging the fragile, star-shaped pods, spice processors use a multi-stage automated cleaning line. Because star anise breaks easily, traditional heavy-impact milling cleaners cannot be used.
Instead, a combination of density separation, magnetic filtration, and gravity mechanics is employed.

1. Removing Stones and Mud Balls
Stones, gravel, and mud balls can match the exact size of star anise pods, making standard mesh sifting ineffective. Processors use two specialized machines:
Gravity Destoners: This equipment uses a sloped, vibrating deck combined with a continuous upward air current. Because star anise pods are light and hollow, the air floats them down the chute, while the heavier stones and glass shards trail upward and drop into a reject bin.
Magnetic Destoners: Many field stones and clay mud balls contain trace amounts of iron oxides (paramagnetic properties). Passing the bulk spice over a high-intensity magnetic conveyor roller pulls these stone impurities out of the main spice stream.
2. Removing Metal Impurities (Tramp Metal)
Metal contaminants like nails, wire pieces, and machine wear-and-tear fragments are separated using targeted magnetic arrays.
Rare-Earth Drum Magnets: Positioned at the initial intake or conveyor dumping points. Bulk star anise falls over a spinning magnetic drum, which catches and pulls out larger pieces of ferrous metal.
Plate Housing Magnets: Installed in vertical gravity drop chutes. Dual, high-strength magnetic plates line the inside of the chute to capture fine metal filings as the spice streams past without slowing down the flow.
Inline Metal Detectors (with Auto-Reject): Positioned right before final packaging to detect non-magnetic metals (like stainless steel, brass, or aluminum). If any trace metal passes through the sensor loop, an automated flap opens to instantly dump the contaminated batch.
Recommended Processing Flow
Air Cleaning (Aspiration): Blows away light debris like twigs, leaves, and dust.
Magnetic Separation: Catches initial raw metal fragments before they can damage downstream machinery.
Destoning: Segregates high-density stones, glass, and heavy mud balls.
Final Quality Detection: Passes the sorted pods under a final metal detector or optical color sorter prior to sealing bulk bags.
