Gardenia alias: yellow gardenia, mountain zhi, white toad, is the rubiaceae plant gardenia fruit. The fruit of gardenia is a traditional Chinese medicine, which belongs to the l batch of medicine and food dual-use resources issued by the Ministry of Health. It has the functions of protecting liver, gallbladder, lowering blood pressure, sedation, hemostasis and detumescence. It is often used to treat jaundice hepatitis, contusion, hypertension, diabetes and other diseases in TCM clinic. Containing crocus pigment glycoside, can be used as yellow dye.


Gardenia is the most widely used yellow dye before the Qin and Han dynasties, gardenia fruit contains the ketone substance gardenia flavin, as well as saffron in, the substance used for yellow saffron acid. "Han Guan Yi" recorded: "dyed garden Zhi, Qian, for dyeing imperial clothing." That means gardenias were used for the most exclusive clothing. In ancient times, acid was used to control the depth of the yellow color of gardenia, and to obtain a deep yellow color, the amount of vinegar in the dye was increased.
